The
history of the Sacred Heart Church could hardly be considered complete
without a reference to the cemetery that adjoins the Chapel. Old cemeteries,
especially with a rural setting, are always revered areas. They reveal
how historical and personal events are always intertwined. The old cemetery
at White Marsh has a character, beauty and serenity all its own. It seems
inseparable from Sacred Heart Church, linking us with the faith of those
who have gone before. The old cemetery is well maintained. Seldom is any
grave without some present recognition, even if it is only a tiny floral
sprig. A newer cemetery adjoins the old and continues the heritage of
those families who have prayed, lived, loved, cried, laughed and died
at Sacred Heart Church. The feeling of continuity is very powerful. The
special Mass and ceremony of the Blessing of the Graves held each year
on Memorial Day is a deeply moving and beautiful service. After the Mass
the congregation, young and old, walk throughout the cemetery praying
the Rosary as the priest blesses the gravesites.
